When people think about quality in PCB assembly, they often picture final inspection or functional testing. In reality, quality is the result of an entire system working together. From PCB design and component sourcing to assembly processes, inspection, testing, and continuous improvement, every stage contributes to the reliability of the final product. True manufacturing excellence comes not from finding defects at the end, but from building quality into every step of the journey.
Every Process Impacts the Next
Quality is the result of many interconnected processes, without which potential issues can compound and cause issues down the line.
Procurement
Genuine components ensure the board functions as intended when built and achieving this requires reputable suppliers, good relationships and strict supplier onboarding procedures. It is equally important to ensure the correct components are used to prevent line stops and reworks; this requires quality-minded people with years of electronics experience following processes.
Goods Handling
Stores need to ensure that parts are correct and genuine as they enter the building. This can be achieved through thorough goods in inspection, including grey market inspections for obsolete and broker-sourced parts, and x-ray verified quantities. The handling of parts also needs to be in line with MSL and ESD guidelines to prevent any damage to components. Kit inspection is a critical element of goods handling as it ensures that all parts are correct to the line – without these, boards might not function or may require costly reworks.
Line operation
As a PCB continues through line operation, there are a number of processes that must be performed timely and accurately to ensure the boards meet inspection checks. These processes include: stencil printing, solder printing, pick and place machines, and reflow. To ensure a high quality is met throughout the processes, experienced operation managers and engineers are present throughout both the assembly planning and line operations. They will be supported by the quality department to ensure high standards are consistently met at each stage, reducing the likelihood of issues at the inspection stage.
Inspection and Test
Inspection and testing are an important stage in the series of quality processes but people are mistaken to think it is the only quality stage. Having specially trained inspectors and test operators ensure boards are verified for build quality and functionality. A weakness at any of these stages can affect the final product.
Quality is the outcome of a chain, and a chain is only as strong as its weakest link.
People are the most important factor of the quality system
A quality system would be non-existent without people as they make the system happen. Even with advanced equipment and defined processes, quality depends on having trained operators, engineers and inspectors all working together to ensure procedures are followed, problems are escalated quickly and continuous improvements become a part of everyday work.
